Teaching Social Media @SFUsurrey and looking for feedback

Finally, Simon Fraser University is bringing a course to the undergraduate students that’ll explore Social Media and its influence on business. It’ll be a fourth year Business course, BUS 495.  And… I’ll be one of the Instructors alongside Jan Kietzmann. It’ll be a fun course, with lots of discussions and project applications. We’re looking for stellar & fun students to join the class – so if that’s you, enroll :)

Here’s a tidbit of what we’ll be covering:

No prior Social Media knowledge is required. Topics will introduce and discuss “social” frameworks (e.g., reciprocity and fairness), concepts (e.g., community building, conversation curation, virality), and Social Media ethics, terms, tools and techniques (e.g., for measuring and monitoring activity and ROI). Together, these will provide a well-rounded perspective for Social Media newcomers and experts alike. For students with relevant experience, Bus495 will be an opportunity to reflect, question and improve their own approaches to managing Social Media.

Jan and I will be super flexible with the course topics. It’s the first time SFU will have a course like this and we’re looking for feedback on Topics from students and industry professionals.

For students – Whether you’re interested in enrolling or not…what’re you hoping to achieve out of the course, and/or what’re you wanting to learn? Suggestions for projects are welcomed as well.

For Professionals - What about Social Media do you think Students will need to be excellent in before they step out into the workforce?

PPS. You may, or may not, get extra marks for giving us feedback now :)

Two amazing instructors!! What are the requirements for this course, other than being stellar and fun (I’ve already got that down)?

  • Guest

I want to learn how to get more followers than Kim Kardashian on Twitter.

  • Ashish

Prereqs are 60 Credits and BUS 360. We’re also letting in students from other faculties/concentrations

I’m interested in social media, so naturally I’m ecstatic about this! Definitely wanting to enroll! And I have the same question as Kim! What are the requirements??

Requirements are 60 Credits and BUS 360, but as mentioned, if you don’t have the Reqs, just let me know :)

This is fantastic news!! As a student pursuing a career in social media and marketing, this is really exciting stuff to hear. Thank you for sharing the information with us!

Some questions I have are as follows: Will this class be focusing on a specific part of business (i.e., marketing), or will it be teaching about the effects of social media on ALL aspects of business? Will this course be taught as a seminar or a lecture, and will there be tutorials and/or workshops in class? What kind of projects are you and Jan thinking of assigning to the students?

    Thanks! :D

This is really cool! But I’m wondering what’s the focus of the course, is it leaning towards “how a company uses social media to promote etc?” (marketing) or something else? Plus, is this course only a one time thing or would it come back every semester? Because I don’t think I meet the requirements yet.

It’ll be the effects of SM on all aspects of Business, the media and the world.

There will be a 3 hour seminar/discussion type class. There may be some field trips, some full out discussion classes etc. We’re pretty flexible instructors.

Projects will range from creating Social Media strategies for businesses, to growing your own communities w/ Social Media. Looking forward to any suggestions you may have as well :)

    Hey Natalie,
Read below for my comment RE what we’re covering.

In terms of whether this is a one time thing, I’m not too sure. It depends on SFU Beedie. For now, it’s only offered this one time, and it’ll count towards a few concentrations.

If you don’t meet the requirements, but you’re interested, just shoot me an e-mail at hello@ashishgurung.ca and let me know why you’re interested.

Analytics and measuring ROI. Gotta do it.

    Hey Ashish,
Sorry I took so long to respond to this (doesn’t work on my phone!). This is a super exciting course, almost made me want to prolong my undergrad for it… Almost.

Anyway, I’m taking a CMNS course on SM and the Knowledge Network right now and based on the feedback from the other 19 members of my class, things they were interested in knowing were how businesses can use SM (basically, how they can get a job in SM or improve their current role in SM) and to create a unified brand either for themselves or their company using SM. One thing that I’ve noticed people don’t understand in our seminar discussion is that not all strategies are equal!! The depth of interaction varies depending on the company, industry, and service/product offering. A NPO will have a different strategy from a group sharing site and a government organization.

    Ditto to Jeremy’s comment below.

Just wondering, what have you and Jan defined as “Social Media?”

  • http://www.karrabarron.com Karra

How to properly write a tweet or a fan page update. None of this #iamhungry hashtagging. Also, how to turn social media into a career either with a company or a freelancer (maybe even the pros and cons of both).

I would like to learn how to build a social media strategy. And as long as it is a 400 hundred level course, my expectations will be set very high for this course, i.e. I would expect to learn a lot of insights of this industry.

My suggestion will be to have one or two speakers with a crazy successful social media  strategy building experience.

That’s the plan! We’re either going to be bringing in speakers, or having us go on field trips to the offices of some Social Media companies.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=116206820 Ashish Gurung

Interesting – we’ll probably bring in a speaker for the Career part.

    no :)
